SEPTEMBER 11 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: Mark 13:24-27

It was on September 11, 2001, when the unthinkable happened. As hijacked airplanes flew in to the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Philadelphia...it literally seemed like the world was crashing down around us. In the aftermath there was something different about our country, at least for a little while. The churches were full...we saw both Democrat's and Republican's embracing each other at the Capitol and even praying together...people seemed to be kinder and more caring and we were going to stand together against this great evil as Americans. Then after a short while, we got back to normal. We forgot, we became self-centered again, personal agendas became the focus and worst of all, we stopped praying, stopped caring, stopped standing together. It seems to be the way of humans, especially humans without the Lord.

In our personal lives we are constantly hit with news and circumstances that knock us off our feet. Sometimes our bodies fail...the world around us fails and those in whom we put our trust fail. We lose those whom we love. We see and experience injustice and nobody seems to understand or care. We are misunderstood and mistreated. It is the way of this sin-fallen world. What are we going to do...where are we going to go...in whom shall we trust? In Jesus' ministry there came a time when He shared what it would mean and cost to follow Him. It was too much for most of His "would-be followers," so they left Him. When He saw this happening, He turned to the twelve and asked, "Would you leave me to?" One of Christ's disciples answered, "Where else are we going to go, for You have the words of eternal life." And that's the key for us today...the world is heading in a godless direction, we are constantly getting bad reports from every sphere of life, those who once stood with us have now abandoned us. The only place we can go is to the One who holds eternity in His hand. By the way...there is no better place to go!
