NOVEMBER 29 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: JOHN 14:19-24
Where there is no growth something is wrong. When we have an infant there is an expectation that we must do most everything for them. But, we also expect them to grow and mature as they age to be able to do things for themselves. If someone is twenty years old and still having their parents do everything for them we would all agree that things are not right there for some reason. Spiritual growth is much the same. There is definitely something wrong if someone has been a Christian for decades and they are still an infant, spiritually. It is in our growing that we move from the milk of the Word to the meat of the Word. Milk is important but it is not meant to be all we have in our diet. The Lord wants us to grow in understanding and in depth. He wants us to be able to share with others from a place of maturity who He is, and what He has done. There is something wrong for those who have been Christians for a long time to still be responding as a baby in Christ.
If we are not growing in our Christian walk, we are actually dying. Stagnation is never a good thing. Stagnant water begins to stink and become putrid. If we don't grow, we become much the same. The Scripture labels this call to grow; being a disciple. It not only has to do with growing in knowledge, but also growing in our love and understanding of the Lord. It is also in this growth that we develop a more intimate relationship with the Lord and it is in this growth that we are able to have proper biblical relationships with each other. It is the immature Christians that are petty the ones that always have to get their way, or they throw a spiritual tantrum. They are actually the ones that think they are mature, yet act like spiritual babies. We have been called to Christ in salvation and we have been called to grow in Christ. Jesus told us that He gave us His Holy Spirit in order that we might receive the things of God and grow in them. It should be the norm that we each grow in Christ every day!
