DECEMBER 29 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: JOHN 10:7-10

In all the years I have been in the ministry what has been universally true is that everyone I have met wanted to have a full and abundant life. They have all wanted to be loved. They have all wanted their existence to matter. They have all wanted peace and joy and fulfillment. Some have through the years found it, while others have sadly missed it. What was the determining factor between whether someone found that abundant life, or missed it? It was where they were looking for it. It is Jesus and Jesus alone that gives the abundant life. The life where everything else is enhanced and made that much better because of Jesus! Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly."

The world can never give you the abundance that your heart longs for. In all actuality the only thing this world can give you in abundance is disappointment, grief and heartache. To be fair, there are some things in this world that give happiness, on a limited basis, but we are talking about a truly abundant life that doesn't stop when our physical life is over. Even the best this world has to offer pales in comparison to what we have in Jesus. And everything this world promises is at best temporary. As we enter this new year, I encourage you to keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, for He is the "Author and Finisher" of our faith. All we need is in Him and He doesn't just provide just enough of Himself to get by, but He promises in Him we have the abundant life. As I say this, don't go jumping into the carnal mindset of the "name it, claim it" crowd. Jesus did not promise an abundance of things, He promised in Himself we would have an abundant life. A life of abundance of the things that really matter in this life and in eternity. You want your life to have real meaning, you want your existence to really matter and you really desire an abundant life. Then stop looking in all the wrong places and look to the One who has promised to give you all those things in Himself...JESUS!
