SEPTEMBER 10 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: Exodus 20:1-17

Who's in charge here? Seems like in this world the one thing that people want more than anything is more than riches, fame and a good name, is POWER! They want to be the one in charge! Why else would two people spend over a billion dollars each for a job that pays roughly half million a year? Or others who will spend literally multi-millions for a job that pays a quarter million? Mankind wants to be in control...seeking power and doing and saying anything to get it. What once was supposed to be a place of temporary service to the country, has become lifetime positions. Where either families continually seek the highest position in the land, building dynasties...or where people go for decades, securing their powerful positions making laws to benefit self and interests groups who paid the large fee for them to get there. Sound a little cynical? Well maybe it is...but I'm not too far off.

If we are not careful we each can fall into the snare of power and attempt to build our own little kingdoms. We humans want to be our own final authority. Since the creation of mankind we have been rejecting God's absolute authority in our lives. We have gone off in to idolatry, which allows us to create a god that we can control. We like him to be just big enough to get us out of trouble, but not so big that he has all the power. We want him to do what we tell him to do, when we tell him to do it and how we tell him to do it! The One true God of creation will not share His glory or His power with anyone. He is omnipotent! We fool ourselves to think we are in charge. Have you stopped and thought about anything and I mean anything that you have absolute control over? You try to name one thing and I know I can show you that you don't. The wonderful thing about our God who has absolute power is that He also loves us absolutely. When He gives commands, it is always for our best and because of His great love. Let’s not be mistaken, they are commands and not suggestions!
