OCTOBER 7, 2023 ~ THEMATIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE

OCTOBER 7 READING…JEREMIAH 27-29 & HEBREWS 7

People in trouble will naturally want a “word from the Lord”. But what they want from the Lord is what they want to hear. That is why they give validity to false prophets and false preachers. A nation in rebellion cannot expect a good word from the Lord. A nation in rebellion does not want to hear from the Lord, but from false prophets and preachers who will tell them what they want to hear. Judah had been taken captive, the Lord already spoke through Jeremiah that the captivity would last 70 years, now Hananiah, a false prophet, comes along and tells the people that the captivity would only last 2 years. This misuse of God’s Name by this false prophet cost him his life. God then instructs Jeremiah to tell the people how to live in the time of captivity, they were to be a blessing to Babylon, to grow fields, set up homes, bring children into the world. God had a plan beyond captivity…but for now this would be their existence. They were to trust God in captivity, as they should have trusted Him in their freedom. In Hebrews we are reminded again that Jesus is our great High Priest. That we have no need to go through any human to speak to God, but we can go directly to the Father through the Son. When we have a high priest who is human, he is subject to human failings…but with Jesus, He is our perfect High Priest. We never have to worry that our prayers will not reach the Father…the Son guarantees they will.
