MAY 8 READING…JUDGES 9 & PSALM 120
The wicked prosper for a season, but their end is their own destruction. Sadly, they do great harm in the time of their personal prosperity…hurting many innocent people, and destroying much good. Abimelech was one of the 70 sons of Gideon. Gideon dies and the Israelites again rebel against God and begin to worship baal. Which one of the sons of Gideon would serve as the judge of Israel? Remember, this was not a birthright like that of a monarchy. Abimelech was wicked and deceitful…he lured his brothers together for a proposed meeting, and there he killed all of them except Jotham, who was hiding. Abimelech was ruling when God sent a spirit of ill will about him to the people of Shechem, which led to the death of Abimelech at the hand of a woman. The Lord repaid the evil of Abimelech that day. The Psalmist reminds us that it is God who will ultimately bring the evil people to perfect justice. We often wonder why it seems that evil people prosper, and God’s people have to suffer. We must remember that the prosperity of the evil is only for a short while on this sin-fallen world. For God will avenge all evil…and God will reward for eternity all His righteous children.
