MARCH 12 READING…NUMBERS 19-20 & PSALM 90 & JOHN 2
The theme of today’s reading is that disobedience to God always brings consequences. Moses and Aaron are commanded by God to take Aaron’s rod with them, and before the people of Israel speak to the rock to bring forth water. Israel was again on the edge of rebellion, complaining about a lack of water. Once again the Lord was going to provide for them…and He was going to do it His way, so there would be no doubt it was the Lord. Instead in his anger Moses struck the rock twice…the water came out, but both Moses and Aaron would not be there to lead the people into the land of promise because of their disobedience. The psalmist speaks of both the anger and power of God in dealing with His rebellious people. The psalmist cries for God’s mercy, in relenting from the punishment He was bringing on them. In John 2 Jesus cleanse the Temple, for the merchants had turn a place of prayer into a place of merchandise and cheating people. The Lord drove these money changers out of the Temple, as He made a whip to use and He overturned their tables. It is a mistake to try to convince ourselves that we can be in disobedience toward God with impunity. Disobedience always has a cost…disobedience continued has dire consequences.
