JUNE 30 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: JOHN 14:15-18
One of the essentials of our Christian faith is obedience. Jesus said, "If you love Me, you will obey My commands." Why do you suppose this is so necessary? Who has the mind of God? Who can even know the mind of God? It is He, not we that knows the end from the beginning. He is always at work around us and through us, revealing His love and salvation. Faith requires obedience even when and maybe especially when, we can't figure it out or understand the reason why God is doing what He is doing. It is true that many times God chooses to give us insight to what He is thinking and doing...but that is not all the time.
The occurrence of Abraham and Isaac are a prime example. Surely it seems unreasonable for God to require Abraham to take his only son and offer him as a sacrifice...but Abraham believed God completely and obeyed everything God said. And in this great display of obedience of this man of God, we see a foreshadow of THE greatest display of obedience the world has ever, or will ever, know. It was at the cross that the Son of God obeyed His Father, even unto death, for in God's plan Jesus came to die. Seems unreasonable... certainly there was a better plan? No, God's plan was and always is, perfect! Because of Jesus' obedience, we now can have forgiveness of sin and eternal life.
God is at work in your life...He may or may not reveal to you what He is doing or why He is doing it. You can know that He loves you and His plan and work is His best for You. Today by faith, together, let's obey the voice of our God and Savior.
