JANUARY 30 READING…MATTHEW 22
Not everyone invited will attend, nor do they want to attend. This is a basic principle of how people are…and have always been. Jesus told a parable about a huge wedding feast that a king threw for his son who was getting married. He sent invitations to all those who were expected to be part of the celebration, yet these “notable” individuals did not come. So, the king told his servants to expand the invitations to those that were never expected to be there…much less ever receive an invitation. This parable revealed the truth that the religious leaders of Jesus’ day were not looking for THE Messiah, but a messiah that looked like them. They became offended at Jesus’ parable, and begin to plot against the Lord. They tried to trap Him in the matter of taxes…they failed. They tried to create a conflict concerning the reality of the resurrection…they failed. They tried to get Jesus to be in conflict with the Law of God…they failed. Finally, Jesus caught them in their own faulty logic and understanding. They could not grasp how the Messiah would be of the line of David, yet David would call Him Lord. We are called to know and speak the truth. Our obedience to this call should not be based on how people respond, or even if they respond…our obedience should be based on the call of God.
