JANUARY 23, 2024 ~ A WALK THROUGH THE NEW TESTAMENT

JANUARY 23 READING…MATTHEW 17

One of my favorite events recorded in the Bible is in our reading today. This event gives us a clear picture of the purpose of the Scripture, and how God intended His revelation of Messiah to work. Peter, James, and John were on the mountain with Jesus and He was transfigured (changed so they saw the pre and post incarnate Christ) for the first time. Moses and Elijah appeared there with Jesus. It is clear the Holy Spirit gave the disciples insight, as they recognized them. Peter wanted to build booths and remain there with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. But God spoke up and said of Jesus, “’This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” The Lord was revealing that the purpose for Moses, who represented the law…and for Elijah, who represented the prophets…was Jesus. All of the law, and all of the prophets were given to point us to Jesus. He is the fulfillment of both the law and the prophets. It always has been, it is, and it will always be about Jesus. With Jesus we have all that we need. The other thing that this event shows is that, like Peter, we would all like to stay on the mountain…we cannot. The mountain top experiences are great, but we need to go with Jesus down in the valley. Because it is in the valley where people are hurting and in need. We were all in that valley…I am so glad Jesus came down and rescued me. How about you?

Please share your thoughts.
