JANUARY 11 READING…GENESIS 24 & MATTHEW 5
Today’s theme in our readings is God’s provision for His covenant people. In Genesis we have the story of Isaac and Rebekah. Abraham was trusting God for the provision of a proper wife for Isaac. Ishmael had already gone out on his own and acquired a wife. Abraham did not want this for Isaac, so he sent his servant back to his people to find a wife for Isaac. This whole event is filled with occurrences that proved that God’s hand was upon Abraham and Isaac. The Lord always provides for His people…if we would learn to wait on Him, we would have the Lord’s best in our lives. The servant of Abraham was obedient to him, as Abraham was obedient to God…the result being a blessing to the people of God through Rebekah.
In our Matthew readings Jesus from His sermon on the mount shares with us the provision of God’s truth to His people. He tells us what true blessings are, and where the come from…we are called to be poor in spirit, mournful when appropriate, meek, to hunger and thirst for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and ready to face persecution for righteousness' sake. These bring the blessings of God into the life of a child of God. He tells us we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world…we are to live like it. Jesus informs the world that He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament Law, and as such gives us a clearer look at what the law really means. He equates hatred in our hearts to murder. He tells us that adultery is not only an act, but also to look at another person’s spouse with lust in our hearts. He clarifies the meaning of the covenant of marriage. He commands us to refrain from making oaths…they are above our pay grade. We are not to be retaliatory…but we are to always act in love. These are great provisions from God that we are called to live by…they will make a huge difference in our lives, and in the lives of others.
