FEBRUARY 3 DEVOTION BIBLE READING: GALATIANS 3:1-9

Far too many of we evangelical Christians were raised in a "performance-based" religious environment. We were taught that salvation comes only through the grace of God by faith in His Son Jesus. But then we were also taught, either by inference or by intention, that our performance determined how God felt about us and whether or not He accepted us...or even worse, how He loves us. So we tried harder and harder to prove ourselves to God, only to fall short time after time. We became frustrated with the Christian life because we felt it was not working. We were experiencing more strain and frustration than experiencing the abundant life Jesus promised. In our hearts we wanted to do better, be stronger and walk more holy lives...only to find out that we could not. We "rededicated" our lives, we became determined to do better and we committed ourselves to try harder, each time resulting in "not good enough."

We need a shift in our religious thinking. Jesus never called us to perform for Him. He called us to trust Him. The Lord did not save us by His grace, only to send us out to do our best; to return so He could grade our performance. We need to understand that in Christ we are made Holy by God...we are completely accepted of God...and we are totally loved of God. He has not called us to be strong, but to be weak..."for it is in our weakness that His strength is made manifest." Paul was concerned about the churches in Galatia because they were being led to believe that they came to God by grace, but then were made perfect in their flesh--impossible! Stop trying to be the best Christian YOU can try to be...and rest in Christ and see Him make you into all that He promised He would. It is impossible for us to live the Christian life...only Jesus can do that...that is why we need Christ and His grace not only for salvation, but for every day.
