FEBRUARY 26 READING…LEVITICUS 16-18 & 1 JOHN 1
Today’s theme is the work of God in atoning us, and our call to live as an atone people. Moses begins our reading today in speaking about the need of atonement…that is to be made right with God. First, the high priest needed to be made right with God in order to be qualified to offer up the blood sacrifice for the atonement of the nation of Israel. The process and the sacrifice were God ordained…they could not do, or bring, anything they wanted…they had to do and bring what God required. All the priests had to be atoned for in preparation for the Day of Atonement for the people. The Day of Atonement would be a continual offering of the blood on the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies until the final sacrifice of blood would be made by Jesus on the last altar mankind would ever need…Calvary. The Lord required His atoned for people to walk and live as atoned people. In other words, the atonement made them right with God…and now they were to live as people who were right with God. This covered their worship, their sexual conduct, and their day to day relationship with others.
In 1 John we are told that through Jesus, who is the eternal Word of God, we are made right with God…He has atoned us with His own blood. He suffered and died, but He also overcame death by His resurrection…now His life is our life. We share this truth with the whole world in great hope that they might know the Lord and His redemption. John reminds us that as Jesus is the light we are to walk in that light. We have been atoned for, now we are to live as atoned people. If we fall into sin, we are to confess that sin…meaning to agree with God about our sin, turn from that sin back to God, and walk in the forgiveness He gives.
Please share your thoughts.
