FEBRUARY 12 READING…EXODUS 27-28 & PSALM 96
How are we to come before the Lord? How are we to minister before the Lord? How are we to prepare ourselves to serve the Lord? Today’s theme is that God determines what God requires. In Exodus Moses gives instruction about the outer court of the tabernacle, including the bronze altar, and purity of the oil that the people are to bring for the lighting of the tabernacle. He then gives God’s requirement for the priests clothing, along with specific instructions and distinctions of the high priest’s clothing. The priests were required to approach the Lord only in the way the Lord had instructed…and when they did they had to be prepared in the dress that God demanded. This was the outward preparation, but they were also to be prepared inwardly. The point is that so often we humans want to tell God how we will come before Him, how we will minster before Him, and that we are to be prepared as we enter into His presence. That preparation comes from the Lord, as does everything in our lives.
In Psalm 96, the psalmist shouts forth the glory of God. To do so, the first thing that needs to happen is an understanding and a recognition that the Lord is God. He sits above all other gods, and above all humanity. We exist to give Him glory and honor. We recognize He alone is sovereign over all things. He reigns over all nations of the earth…even if they refuse to acknowledge it. God is okay with the world, as long as they can create a god in their own image…one who is subservient to them. The psalmist continues the message of Exodus 27-28, that it is God, and Him alone, that determines how mankind comes to Him, ministers before Him, and presents themselves to Him.
