FEBRUARY 1 READINGS…Exodus 1:1-2:25, 1 Chronicles 6:1-3a, Exodus 3:1-4:17.
Today we return to the narrative of the family of Jacob in Egypt. All the sons of Jacob died, including Joseph, and about 300 years has past. The Pharaoh now does not know anything of Joseph…but what he does know is that these foreigners, the Israelites are growing exponentially in number. This becomes concerning to him, so he makes them slaves…and he has them treated very cruelly. Even with the harsh treatment the Israelites continue to grow in number…so Pharaoh institutes the slaughtered all the male Hebrew children. First just prior to birth, in an ancient abortion policy…and then when the midwives refused to do this, Pharaoh had the live baby boys killed. Planned Parenthood and every modern day abortion mill would be please…and I’m sure Molech was salivating then, as he is today!
Out of this God miraculously saves Moses…and then moves Moses to the desert of Midian. Moses was 40 years old when he left Egypt. In Midian Moses marries and starts a family…but then God visits him through a burning bush. God places a call on Moses life…God was going to use Moses to set His people free from the bondage of Egypt. Moses bristles at the call, and wants to know who should he say sent him. God give Moses His Name…”YHWH”…the eternal Name of God…literally I AM, I ALWAYS HAVE BEEN, I ALWAYS WILL BE…the Name of God! That should have been enough for Moses…it should be enough for us that the eternal God has chosen us and sent us. Moses wanted more…so God supplied him with all that he would need, even assuring him that the elders of Israel would listen to him. Finally, God gave Moses his brother Aaron also…and God once again promised to be with them both, as they led the Lord’s people out of the bondage of Egypt. This is a reminder to us that when God calls us…He will be our supply…and that being the case we will always have all we need to answer God’s call on our lives.
Please share your thoughts on today’s readings. This is an incredibly exciting portion of Scripture…God’s mighty hand is going to be seen in leading, protecting, and providing for His people. And He is the same God today.
TOMORROW’S READINGS…Exodus 4:18-7:13.
