AUGUST 8 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 6:25-33

Worry is not a spiritual gift! Jesus tells us not to worry, but to trust the Lord in all things. We live in a troubled world and from our perspective; worry seems to be the appropriate response. But our Lord tells us that worry changes nothing, except us. Our situation, our security, our sustenance will not change with worry...but our sanity will. Worry consumes us and causes us to miss the Lord. Worry makes us put our mind on things and circumstances rather than on Jesus. Worry, rather than motivating us to move forward, actually paralyzes us.

The opposite of worry is faith! Biblical faith places our trust, our lives, our security, our today, our tomorrow, our eternity, in God's hands. When we worry we are taking control, with faith we acknowledge that the Lord is in control. The writer of Proverbs put it this way, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths." Faith moves us from worrying about things we cannot change to a place of trusting God who is able to do all things. Our God loves us, He cares about every aspect of our lives and He is able to completely take care of us, no matter what the situation or circumstance. We are commanded by Jesus to not worry, but have faith in God!
