AUGUST 11 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: 1 PETER 1:3-5

Many times our perspective on what is really valuable is driven more by this world than by eternity. We have bought in to the philosophy of what makes a person rich is how big their bank account is...how glamorous their home is...how many vehicles they own. In the scheme of things, the reality is those things have no real value at all. Let me prove it to you. How many of those things last beyond this temporal life? How many of those things are guaranteed to be free from corrosion, free from corruption, free from being taken from us? The answer is not one of them.

Jesus told us to, "…store up treasures in heaven, not here on the earth." Earthly treasures are for a moment, while heavenly treasures are for eternity. Our earthly treasures or wealth do not determine our heavenly treasures. But if we are not careful, focusing on the earthly treasures could cause us to lose the heavenly ones. We need a heavenly perspective when it comes to what has real value. Heaven's economy is completely different than this world's economy. In this world we seek after gold, it seems to be every person's dream to have a lot of it, we live our lives for it. Now think about it from an eternal perspective, we put huge value on dirt, pretty dirt yes, but dirt none the less. People have lied for it, they have cheated for it, they have stolen for it, they have killed for it and they have even sold their souls for it. For dirt...for dirt! Have we lost our perspective or what? Here's a little perspective for us to think about...in heaven do you know what this dirt, that many spend their whole lives seeking and desiring, is used for? ASPHALT!
