APRIL 17, 2024 ~ A WALK THROUGH THE NEW TESTAMENT

APRIL 17 READING…JOHN 10

Jesus reveals Himself as the Good Shepherd in this chapter of John. All can see the way Jesus speaks of Himself in the same way David did in Psalm 23. Only God can be the Good Shepherd, for only He can make it so we want for nothing. Jesus carries the picture of the shepherd even further when declaring that the Good Shepherd will lay down His life for His sheep. As opposed to a hireling, who will run when trouble happens…and actually sacrifice his sheep for his own safety. Jesus was prophesying about what was coming, and what He would do in going to the cross in order that His people might have eternal life. Jesus also spoke of the fact that He would rise from the dead…overcoming death once and for all for those who put their trust in Him. Once again, the unbelief of the religious leaders led them to declare that Jesus must have had a demon…though Jesus miracles stood against such a ridiculous declaration. At the Feast of Dedication, the religious leaders attempted to trap Jesus as a blasphemer if He declared to claim to be Messiah. They were not interested in truth, but in trapping Jesus, so they could kill Him. This is a fact that played out for them in the not too distant future from today’s reading in Scripture. Jesus left Jerusalem for the desert of Judea, where many people came to the place of faith…many of who were followers of John the baptizer.
