JANUARY 26 DEVOTION BIBLE READING: PROVERBS 23:6-28

It is so important that each of us guard our thoughts...left unchecked they become our actions. God made us so that we receive data from the outside through our minds. We need to be sure what we are feeding our minds are those things that are pure, holy, righteous and God honoring. Our eyes and ears are the window to the mind. Computer people use an acronym, "GIGO"...Garbage In, Garbage Out." It does matter what we listen to...what we watch...what books we read...whose teachings we receive. We must guard our minds, receiving input from those places that glorify the Lord.

Not only do we need to guard what we receive into our minds, we also need to be careful where we let our “thought life” take us. It is really popular right now for people to spend a lot of time in fantasy experiences...from the relatively benign role-playing games, moving to the more involved reality TV, all the way to cyber-sex and relationships. These are not real, but they can become real as we continually let them control our minds. The Bible warns that sin begins in the mind...it grows to a place of action...and when full grown in us, leads to death. This is no fantasy...this is real and it has destroyed many people who thought it didn't matter what they thought about, what they fantasize about, what they opened their mind up to. God has called us to fill our minds with His goodness and to spend our time thinking on Him and all His wonderful blessings. This is a positive approach to guarding our minds. It is not enough to determine we will not think ungodly thoughts, we must think godly thoughts. Our minds cannot be a vacuum...they will always be functioning...they will always be thinking...they will always be receiving. We decide, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit what those things will be that fill our minds!

Please share your thoughts.
