MAY 30 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: DEUTERONOMY 11:26-32
We followers of Jesus make choices each day as to how we will follow Him. We are His because of His amazing grace. We are safe and secure in the promise of salvation through Jesus Christ. The promise of genuine biblical salvation is that it is eternal salvation. That being said, we decide daily how we who are saved will follow the Lord...in obedience or in disobedience. It really comes down to the simplicity of these two choices. There are not a hundred different choices we make as followers of Jesus, there are just two...obey or disobey. We have the Holy Spirit who is within us to lead us to obedience. When we listen and follow Him, obedience is the result. If we refuse to listen to the Holy Spirit and go it on our own, disobedience will be the result every time. There are always consequences for our choices as followers of Jesus, blessings for obedience, trouble for disobedience. We can never expect God to bless us when we refuse to do what He commands.
Through Moses, God challenged the people of Israel to walk in obedience. The Lord told them if they kept His commandments they would experience His blessings, but if they were disobedient they would receive punishment. When the Lord spoke this to His people He began by saying, "Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse..." The Lord wanted them to know that they had a choice...a choice of obedience or disobedience. He wanted them to know that whatever choice they made determined the consequences they would have to face. Sadly, as we read the Scripture, most of the time Israel chose disobedience, so rather than experience God's blessing they live under a curse. This curse was self-imposed. They had a choice and they knew the consequences of that choice. Nothing has changed for the follower of Jesus. We have a choice, and the consequences of that choice are in our hands. Today and every day I encourage you to choose to obey, and see the blessings of God!
