SEPTEMBER 9 READING…COLOSSIANS 2
Our reading today could be subtitled… “When you got Jesus, you got everything!” It seems to be the nature of man to try to add to what God has provided for us through His Son Jesus. The truth is, you cannot add anything to Jesus. Jesus is everything. Paul was concerned with the church in Colosse and Laodicea…for there were those promoting Jesus plus other things. Paul told them, and us, that it is just Jesus! Don’t let people persuade you with clever and slick words. Paul tells us that as we have received Christ, we are to walk in Him. You didn’t need anything but Jesus for salvation…and you don’t need anything but Jesus to walk as a Christian. Don’t be cheated by those who say you need more…it is not Jesus plus philosophy…it is not Jesus plus tradition…it is not Jesus plus the ways of the world…ITS JUST JESUS! For in Him dwells the FULLNESS of the Godhead bodily!
Paul then warns against legalism. The adding of requirements to either get right with God, or to stay right with God. We were dead in our trespasses and sins, but now we are alive in Christ…and we are to live in Christ. There are no regulations or requirements that stand against us…for Christ fulfilled them all for us. He nailed them to the cross, to be put to death once and for all. In this, He disarmed Satan and his demons in our lives. So no one has the right to judge us concerning these things. We have died with Christ from these things that we might live in Him from now on.
