SEPTEMBER 6 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: 1 JOHN 1:5-10
We humans want to be the "captains of our own destiny.” We want to be in charge of everything. Even when it comes to God, we are most comfortable with a "god" that we can control. We like him just powerful enough to do things for us when we need him, but we don't want him to be in complete control. No place is this more evident in our modern time than in the area of sin. People believe they have the ability to change what God has declared. Some have deceived themselves into believing there is no sin, while others pick and choose what they call sin, determined by their particular life style or desires.
Here is what is certain...God is the final One who determines sin. He has all authority and truly cannot be challenged by anyone. Humans do not have the right to condone what God condemns. We are told in the Scriptures to confess our sin...meaning to come into agreement with God concerning our sin, to have the same view of our sin as God does. There is a day of judgment coming when all men will stand before God, and on that day it does not matter what you or I think should be considered sin. It does not matter what the societal norms says is and is not acceptable. It does not matter if the government has legalized sin and called it right...none of this matters. All that matters is what God says, because on that day He is the only Judge and His judgment is final. It is now that we are called to agree with God about our sin, so that we might receive His eternal forgiveness!
