OCTOBER 3 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: Psalm 51:14-17

God is sufficient in Himself. He needs nothing. We can't do anything that makes Him a more complete God. Our faith neither makes Him God...nor does our lack of faith make Him less God. He is not restricted by us in any manner. He does not need to wait on our prayers to act, and is He not held within the limits of our prayers. He is not dependent on what we do or don't do. If we refuse to praise Him the rocks would cry out! It is the approach of the religious mind to make man the center of all things. Mankind thinks that all things exist for us. Biblical Christianity is a faith that has God at the center of all things...and that knows that all things exist for God.

So, since God is self-sufficient and in need of nothing...what can we give Him? Or maybe even better put, what do we possess that He would possibly want from us? God created us for Himself. We were made in the image of God, for God. When mankind's heart turned away from God in rebellion in the garden, we became estranged from God. We chose to go our own way; we believed the lie that we could be just like God. We chose disobedience over a loving relationship. Our sin separated us from God. When God brings us back to Himself, He always does so by beginning on the inside first...with our hearts. He changes our hearts and draws us back to Himself. As Christians, it is that heart for Him that He wants. Service without a heart for God is just empty obligation. Worship without a heart for God is noise. Living without a heart for God is futility. Our all-sufficient God wants our hearts...and since He created us for Himself, He certainly deserves no less!
