OCTOBER 28 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: PSALM 51:1-11

We who are saved by the blood of Jesus have been made clean. That cleansing is what takes away the sin from our lives and ultimately the penalty for sin. Once made clean by Christ...we are clean. But we all know, even as clean, forgiven believers it is possible to get dirt on us. At the time of Jesus’ last supper with His Apostles, you will remember that He washed their feet. Peter was indignant and said that he would not let Jesus wash his feet...Jesus said, "if you will not let me wash your feet you will have no part of Me." Peter responded, "Then Lord wash all of me"...to which Jesus replied, "those who are already clean do not need to be completely washed." We are already clean, Jesus has done that for us....but we still need to wash the dirt off our feet at times.

In 1 John 1:9 we are told, "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." This is not a verse for those who are going to be saved, but to those who are saved. We believers, at times, go off into sin, but we are still believers, we are still saved, we still belong to the Lord. John says He is both "faithful and just" to forgive us...these two words apply specifically to believers for we belong to Him. He has forgiven us already and to those He has forgiven, He promises to continue to forgive. This has nothing to do with getting saved, but because we are saved He continually forgives and cleanses us. What a wonderful Lord we have, who will not allow us to walk around dirty, but as we confess our sins to Him, He continually cleanses us!
