OCTOBER 20 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: Job 42:1-17
The Scripture tells us to "walk by faith, not by sight.” The truth is that we don't always see things clearly. Our view is skewed by so many things. Sometimes it is hard to see past the nose on our face. For us our perspective is our reality. This is the way the world lives, not the way we are called to live. If we chose to walk by sight, rather than by faith, then we would be at the mercy of every situation and circumstance that comes along. We would be tossed here and there by our limited understanding of what is happening and what the Lord is doing in the midst of what is happening.
There was a man named Job, who was having a very hard time. In the midst of these horrible circumstances three of Job's "friends" show up to give their perspective on what was happening and why it was happening. All three gave Job counsel based on their limited experience and understanding. As it turned out, none of them really could see why Job was going through what he was going through. Even Job tried to challenge God about what was happening to him. In the midst of this God spoke and demanded that Job explain things that only God could know. Job repented and said, "I have spoken of things too vast for my understanding.” Our God is a supernatural God....He does supernatural things...there is no way the natural man can begin to comprehend all that God does or why God does them. So God gave us faith and told us to walk by it as we relate to Him and as we go through life. Then God told us something about Himself...that He is faithful...that He is good...that He loves us...that His plan is glorious. We can't always see and understand, so we are called to trust in God who is always there whether the situation and circumstances are good or bad. Today walk by faith...not by sight!
