OCTOBER 17 READING…HEBREWS 2

Chapter 2 begins with a warning for believers to heed the truth they have received…the truth that brought them salvation…the truth that they are called to walk by. The concern was that if believers did not hang on to and live the truth they had received, they would soon drift away. Even the angels who were created in perfection had some of their number fall away, and they lost their first estate. There is no escape if we neglect the great promise of salvation. This salvation is so important that God did miraculous things through His Son, Jesus, and by the work of the Holy Spirit so we humans would be able to respond to His free gift.

The writer of Hebrews then speaks of Jesus’ humanity. The miracle of the Incarnation…Jesus, who is God, coming as a literal man. And though all mankind were created in the image of God, made a little lower than the angels, we were created with the glory of God upon us, and given dominion over all creation. Sin entered into the human condition and we were marred and impacted by that sin…it separated us from God, and actually made us enemies of God. Then God sent His Son Jesus, who never lost His human glory to sin…and because He was sinless, He was qualified to die for our sin, making us right with God. Jesus is not ashamed of us…He loves us, He actually calls us brethren. Jesus came to destroy sin, and to defeat Satan. The angels cannot know the redemption of God…but we fallen humans are blessed to experience His great salvation. Jesus knows us, as He was tempted just as we are…though He overcame all the temptations, and now He enables us to overcome the temptations in our lives.
