OCTOBER 12, 2023 ~ THEMATIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE

OCTOBER 12 READING…JEREMIAH 38-40 & HEBREWS 12

In both our readings in Jeremiah and Hebrews we see that there are consequences for not obeying the voice of the Lord. Jeremiah was threatened with death for speaking the word of the Lord, the nobles of Judah did not like what he said and wanted to put him to death. God spared Jeremiah in order that he might speak God’s word to king Zedekiah. God in his mercy was willing to spare the city of Jerusalem, the king and his family if he would do what Jeremiah told him and surrender peacefully to Nebuchadnezzar. Instead of doing what the Lord commanded Zedekiah did the opposite, and Nebuchadnezzar burned the city, killed all of Zedekiah’s family and all the nobles of Judah, and then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes and took him captive. In Hebrews we are encouraged to put aside our sin, and run the race that God has set before us…always keeping our eyes on the Author and Finisher of our faith, Jesus. When we do not obey the Lord’s directive, He will discipline us. He disciplines His children because He loves us, and wants what is best for us. When we are disobedient or in rebellion our Heavenly Father will do what is needed to bring correction in our lives. The writer of Hebrews warns us not to resist the chastisement of the Lord, it is always for our good. We live in a rebellious time, when people are thumbing their noses at God, and doing whatever they like. We even find this attitude in the church. This cannot continue without the chastisement of God on His children, and the judgment of God on the world.
