NOVEMBER 5 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: JAMES 1:21-27
Biblical principles are only good if we follow them. To say one is a biblical Christian and then to do just the opposite of the clear teachings of Scripture is to prove that one is not. They are empty words and that kind of faith is only there as long as it fits our own personal preferences, bias and lifestyle. It seems about this time, every four years, we American Christians struggle with being a partisan or a follower of Christ. The problem of one who is a true partisan when it comes to politics is that they cannot or will not see the whole truth, but just that "truth" that fits their political party. If we would be Christians in this dark world, we must apply biblical truth evenly across the board. Truth does not know a particular political persuasion. Truth is not bias. Truth does not ignore that fact that wrong is wrong, no matter who does it.
We Christians need to be careful that we don't find ourselves propping up and celebrating that which the Bible condemns. Some would say, "well there is no perfect candidate" or "we are not electing a pastor and chief, but a Commander and Chief.” What a pitifully poor approach to selecting an individual who will ultimately be the most powerful person in the world. The sad thing is that many professing Christians leave their faith outside the voting booth and select someone according to their party and not according to what is biblically right. Our leaders ought to be above reproach, moral, honest, decent, trustworthy. They should have clean hands, believe the Constitution that they swear to uphold and at the very least have reverence for the Bible they swear in on. Our leaders should be servant leaders, who are statesmen who see to the interest of those they serve and not themselves or special interest groups. And we Christians, no matter what our party, should never cast our vote for someone whose policies and practices are an affront to our Holy God...period! If our biblical faith does not determine how we chose leaders then our faith is not as biblical as we profess.
