NOVEMBER 4 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: ROMANS 6:20-23
God cannot be appeased with actions, even religious actions, without our obedience. In other words, our hearts must be right in order for our actions to be right. The religious minded person says, "All that is needed is that I do certain things, like going to church, or giving to the Lord, or reading my Bible, etc.” But the Lord requires more from us. He requires a right heart that is turned toward Him. It is from a right heart that our actions become right.
James talks about both faith and works in the life of a believer. Some say this passage teaches that our works make us right with God. I believe they miss the true meaning of this passage. It does not teach that we are made right by our works, but that our works are proof that we have been made right. The Scriptures teach that the Lord makes our hearts right and from a right heart come actions that are acceptable to God. Think about it...God doesn't need our worship, our money, our service, but He uses them all for His Kingdom's glory when they are offered from a right heart. God touches the heart and through that touch He transforms us completely!
