NOVEMBER 23 READING…AMOS 1-2 & PSALM 142 & ACTS 12
Amos was a farmer in Judah who was called by God to be a prophet…primarily to Israel. So, here was a man with no religious pedigree, and considered a foreigner to the northern kingdom. Why would anyone listen to him? Add to that, he was called to prophesy during a time of prosperity for a Israel…again, why should anyone listen to him? He was sent to warn them of the tragic fall that was coming. Much like our time, everyone is doing relatively well, some better than others, why should we be concerned with the coming collapse? We have become dependent upon money and material things…we think we don’t need God. That was Israel, there is no way they would listen to this farmer prophet…and this is us, there is no way we are going to listen to those ignorant, biased preachers…we know better. The Psalmist tells us what happens to the individual when they won’t listen to the warnings sent from God…they are in misery, all alone, asking for some sort of reprieve. Herod’s hatred for the church grew, and it was recorded for us in Acts 12. He had Peter and James put in prison, and had James killed…he was also planning to kill Peter. God had different plans for Peter, and sent His angel to open the prison for Peter. Herod was so filled with himself that he received worship from people as a god. This did not last long as the angel from the Lord struck him and worms ate his insides until he died. Herod forgot his place before God…God will not share Hos glory with anyone. Those who mock God today by their blasphemy, will pay the consequences for their arrogance.
