NOVEMBER 20 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: 2 TIMOTHY 1:3-7

It is certainly true that we live in a time that is consumed and controlled by fear. People are running crazy in the streets, causing havoc and destruction, because they have let their fears consume them. In this age of social media there is every website imaginable putting out information about everything imaginable to create fear in the hearts of people. Fear based on people receiving half and partial truths and sometimes no truth at all and then letting their fear run wild with them. The sad thing is that many who should know better, not only are consumed and controlled by their own fear, but they share it and bring others into their world of terror...even when there is no basis for such an existence.

Gone are the days of, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." And more importantly for we believers, the truth that, "God has not given us a spirit of fear..." This kind of fear takes over in our lives and it leaves no room for the Holy Spirit to do what He does best. Fear either will paralyze or it will cause us to do things that are not reasonable, prudent, or decent. It is those who are consumed by fear that can have no peace, for even when there is no monster, they create one. Sadly, it is not enough for the fearful to have just their own monsters, but they feel compelled to make everyone else fearful as well. There is no peace in fear...there is no hope in fear...and there is no love in fear. The Scripture reminds us that, "Perfect love casts out all fear.” Don't walk in fear, walk in the Spirit. Don't listen to others that would cause you to fear, but listen to the words of the Lord. Don't be consumed by the spirit of fear, but live in the disciplined mind that the Lord gives us that produces peace and love.
