NOVEMBER 16 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: Psalm 7

Life doesn't have to be miserable, because while it is true we can't always chose what happens to us in life, we do chose how we respond to it. Paul said that he had learned to be content in whatever state he found himself in. Some believe, incorrectly, that if they just had everything they want and everything always went their way and they lived in the most wonderful place on earth, then they would be happy. I have met people who have had much, some were happy and some were unhappy. Likewise, I have met people who had little, some were happy and some were unhappy. Little or much... ultimately it is not what we have or don't have that makes us happy. There is more to it. If our eyes are set on what we have or what we don't have, we will never know true happiness. It is when our eyes are set on Christ, regardless of situation, circumstance, or possessions that we find true and lasting happiness.

To the believer Christ is to be our provision. Yet many times we rate our blessings merely by the things we have. Not everything that looks like a blessing is a blessing. So often we are like the rest of the world, we get things that we think we want or need and if we are not careful those things become the reason for our existence. We spend all our life either paying for them or maintaining them, leaving little time for real living. We mistakenly believe that if we could just have...we would finally be happy. So we get, only to find it does not fulfill our need to be happy. Then we begin to worry that we might lose what we acquired. We all need to learn that it is only Jesus that satisfies. It is only Jesus that can give our life fulfillment and it is only Jesus that can give us true happiness. Happiness is never found in things, for they are just here today and gone tomorrow. Situations and circumstances can give a temporary type of happiness, but it won't last on its own. In Christ we find what we need for true, lasting happiness...there really is no need to look anywhere else.
