MAY 11 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 14:22-33
I hope that we followers of Jesus have come to understand that the only place we are going to see and experience the supernatural power of Christ in our lives is when we get out of the boat and walk on the water with Jesus. There was a time in the ministry of Jesus when His Disciples had gotten in a boat and headed across the Sea of Galilee. In the morning, just before dawn, as they were crossing they saw what they thought was a ghost walking on the water toward them. Finally, they recognized it was Jesus. When Peter saw the Lord, he asked the Lord to let him get out of the boat and come to Him on the water. Jesus told Him to come and Peter got out of the boat and began walking on the water toward Jesus. The waves began to pick up and Peter took his eyes off Jesus and began looking at the waves and as he started to go under, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus reached down and took him by the hand, lifted him up out of the waves and the two got in the boat.
Sometimes we want to pick on Peter for his lack of faith, but remember he was the only one who asked to get out of the boat with Jesus. And before we are too harsh, how many of us would have gotten out of that boat? I fear most of us would have rather of been in the safety of the boat, than out on the water with Jesus. Peter did well in trusting the Lord in getting out of the boat, but he erred in looking and being concerned about the waves instead of keeping his eyes on Jesus. But notice even when he began to sink, he had enough faith to call out to the only one who could save him. We too, have to be willing to get out of the boat where Jesus is. Yes, it can be scary out there, but remember, anywhere that Jesus is and that He invites us to join Him, is the safest place for us to be. He didn't let Peter drown and He won't let us drown. Let’s get out of the boat with Jesus; that is when we get to see and experience the supernatural power of Christ in our lives.
