MARCH 31 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: HEBREWS 9:11-22
The sacrifice is complete...Jesus has died on Calvary's cross. But how do we know it was enough? How do we know that His sacrifice was sufficient to cover our sins? How do we know that the Father has accepted the Son's offering of Himself in our place? Everything that took place at Calvary that day was in fulfillment to prophecy...God's truth given to the prophets of old. Think about it from the betrayal price...to the nails piercing Him...to His death among thieves...to the bitter wine He was offered to drink...to the Romans casting lots for His clothing...to not one bone being broken in His body. All this and more affirm that Jesus is Messiah...and that His offering for our sin was itself a fulfillment of prophecy. We know His sacrifice was enough because it is the fulfillment of God's perfect plan of redemption.
In the Old Testament they would do continual sacrifices of acceptable animals for their sins. In obedience, they would offer these sacrifices knowing that would never be able to take away their sin...they would have to do it all over again. On the cross Jesus became the ultimate and final sacrifice. When He said, "It is finish," He was declaring that the eternal sacrifice was made once and for all. The debt for our sin was paid in full...there would never need to be another sacrifice offered. The precious blood of our Savior was the final payment in full for our sins. And when the sacrifice was done, they took Him off the cross. He would never experience that cross again...that was finished. And we would never have to experience that cross...for Jesus finished it. How do we ultimately know that the sacrifice was accepted of the Father and redemption's work is done? That first Resurrection Sunday morning guarantees it!
