MARCH 29 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: ISAIAH 53
What an incredible Savior! Oh what love He has for you and for me. It was for our transgressions that He went to the cross...it was for our iniquities that He was punished...He was chastised so that we might be have peace with God...and He was beaten so that we might know the eternal healing of our souls. We are reminded that the reason that Jesus went through all this for us is because of His great love for we sinners. We sing that wonderful old hymn..."Oh the love that drew salvation's plan, Oh the grace that brought it down to man, Oh the mighty gulf that God did span...At Calvary." Calvary is where our Savior experienced hell so that we might know heaven.
When we think of the cross we need to remember that Jesus was alone there facing both the cruel rejection of man and the full punishment of His Father for our sins. Man found the innocent One guilty and decided to kill Him...not for any crime that He had done, but because of who He was. Jesus did not fit into their wrong ideas about Messiah. The Prophet Isaiah tells us that it was the Father who punished the Son on the cross...as bad as the physical pain of the cross was, it could not compare to the pain of Jesus having to bare our sins and face our punishment from Almighty God. The incredible thing is, Jesus didn't have to do this...He chose to do this for us. He willingly faced the worst that man could do and the full wrath of His Father for our sin, because of His great love for us. We deserved Calvary...but Jesus went there for us. We deserve eternal hell...but because of Christ’s atoning sacrifice, we now have eternal life!
