MARCH 22 READING…NUMBERS 30 & JOHN 12
The theme that I find in today’s reading is that of integrity. There is so much in John 12 that we could touch on, but I wanted to tie the main part of Numbers 30 with a portion of what John wrote. In Numbers, Moses gives instruction concerning the making of vows to the Lord, and how these vows are binding. These were not meant to be meaningless or empty statements, or casual commitments. It was an important thing that when the people of God made a vow to Him. We are called to integrity when we make a promise or commitment to God, or to others. Jesus said we are to let our yes be yes, and our no be no. The Apostle Judas is an example of a man with no integrity. John describes him as a thief, more concerned about personal gain than for the care of others. Jesus earlier in our readings used the term, “hirelings”, to describe false shepherds who had no integrity. A person with integrity does what is right, because it is the right thing to do. A person with integrity can be trusted to keep their word when they say something, or commit to something. When something comes up that is beyond their control that keeps them from fulfilling their commitment, a person with integrity will make sure contact others impacted by the circumstances. We are called to walk in integrity before God and each other. Integrity is an indicator that we are genuinely people of faith.
