MARCH 1 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: ROMANS 8:28-29
There are so many things in life that we don't understand... things that we can't understand...things that we won't understand this side of heaven. In the midst of all the things that life throws at us, God is there still in control and still working things out that we can't comprehend. Paul, in Romans 8:28, does not deny that there are some bad things that happen, but what he is saying is that God is greater than the events of life. Paul reminds us that God is not bound by situations or circumstances, whether they be good or bad. We tend to let the events of life define us and if we are not careful we let them define God in our lives. We have the tendency to respond by our feelings when things happen, rather than by the truth and promises of God.
The reality is that life is full of hard things and if we are not careful we will let these things determine who we are. It is true that we cannot always determine what will occur in our lives, but we can determine how we respond to them. In faith we trust God, but in the flesh, we let the situation drive our feelings and our actions. Jesus told us to be sure to build our house on the solid rock and not the shifting sand. Christ is the solid rock that enables us to stand when the storms of life come. Trusting in self or letting the event determine who we are or what we do is building our house on the shifting sand, and when the storms of life come, we collapse. In faith we know that God has got this. We know that He is greater than the situation or circumstance. We know that He is working it all together for His good and eternal purpose. That does not always make it easy, but it sure gives us comfort, security and a sense of peace in the difficult times. I love the line of the great old hymn, "On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand." Thank you, Lord, for being our firm foundation in the midst of life's storms!
