JULY 26 READING…1 CHRONICLES 12-13 & LUKE 14
In 1 Chronicles we read of the rest of David’s “mighty men”. Exceptional warriors who were gifted by God to be protectors of God’s anointed king, and the throne of Israel. These men did incredible acts of valor and bravery, as the Lord used them for His purpose in a very troublesome time for the nation. In part of our reading we are told that it was time for the Ark of the Covenant to be moved into Jerusalem. The way they brought it in was not according to God’s requirements. They brought it in on a cart, but God required that the Ark be carried by the Levites. One of the oxen that was pulling the cart that carried the Ark stumbled and Uzza put his hand on the Ark to steady it…and he died. David was so upset by all this, he had them take the Ark away. The issue here is that they tried to do things in their own way, and it caused an innocent man to die. God gave clear instruction, and these men, like us so often, thought they knew better, and did it their own way. When God gives instruction to us, it is always for a reason and for His purpose…we stand on dangerous ground when we disobey or ignore the instruction of God in anything. In Luke, Jesus gives instruction about the Sabbath, and uses parables to teach the things of God. In His parables He warns against being presumptuous with the Lord, and about how the call of the Lord would be rejected by those to whom it was first sent…so the Lord would send it to others. Finally, Jesus reminds us of what it means to be His follower. If we are going to follow Him, we must recognize Him for who He is…and we must obey Him in all things. We must learn the lesson that was taught to David in 1 Chronicles 13.
