JULY 24 READING…1 CHRONICLES 10 & PSALM 125 & LUKE 12
In 1 Chronicles we have recorded for us the death of Saul, the first king of Israel. He and his family were killed in battle against the Philistines. After Saul’s death, his body and that of his sons were defiled by the Philistines, and his armor was taken into the temple of their false god. The writer tells us that Saul did not have to die in this manner, but that he did because of his unfaithfulness. In Psalms we read that God blesses those do what is right. But, there will always be consequences for those who do what is wicked… then, and now. In Luke, Jesus clarifies the meaning of the law of God, especially the meaning and practice of the Sabbath. He speaks of the future, and that God had offered invitations to a certain group, but they ignored His invitation…so the Lord extended His invitation to those who the religious elite would never consider worthy to be welcomed by the Lord. This showed that although they claimed to be servants of God, they were not, for they clearly did not have the heart of the Lord. The Lord tells us to consider the real cost of following Him. There are those who have this “Pollyanna” view of what it means to be a follower of Christ…that is not reality. Before we easily say that we are followers of Christ, we need to understand that to follow Him is very costly in this world…but it is more than worth it.
