JULY 19 READING…1 CHRONICLES 5 & LUKE 7
We read of the lineage of Reuben who lost his place as the first born son in the line of Israel, because of his sin with his father’s concubines. It was Joseph who got the double portion of the first born. Gad also is listed with his descendants. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and have of Manassseh were given the land on the east side of the Jordan River and were unfaithful to God in their idolatry. They were taken away by the Assyrians, and were no more a distinct people. In Luke, Jesus expands His ministry, as He heals the slave of a Roman officer, and He raises a widow’s son back to life. Jesus tells the disciples of John the Baptizer to return to him, and tell him what they have seen Jesus do. Jesus uses the diverse way that He and John approached life to correct the Pharisees…and He calls them to have wisdom, that they have clearly rejected. Finally, Jesus uses an experience in a Pharisee’s home of a sinful woman anointing him to try to help them see that it is the broken and humble who come to Christ whose sins are forgiven, regardless of how many they are…and it is the proud, and religiously self-righteous who will never seek the forgiveness of Christ.
