JULY 13 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: PSALM 119:97-112
God gave us the Scripture because He loves us. I love to both study and teach the Bible...it's my thing! But if we turn the Scripture into merely an academic exercise or simply a hobby because we like to read, we are missing the point. The Scripture was meant to impact our lives. It reveals the Lord to us...it shows us His will...it directs how we are to live. The writer of Hebrews says it is..."alive, sharper than any two-edged sword..." It is able to go to the depth of who we are and even discern the intent of our heart. The Holy Spirit takes the Word and gives us exactly what we need at the time we need it...but of course for that to happen we must be in the Word.
The Psalmist says, "I have hid your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you." God has given us all we need to know about who He is and what He has called us to in His Word. Again the Holy Spirit takes that Word and transforms us from the inside out. But we bear a responsibility in all this too. I've already stated that we must be in the Bible, but there is more. We are called by the Scripture to be, “doers of the Word and not hearers only.” This again shows us that the Scripture was not meant merely for academic purposes, but for practical purposes, that need to be applied each day. God is so good to us in giving us the Bible...let’s read it, let's study it, let's meditate on it and let's obey it!
