JULY 10 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING: 1 TIMOTHY 2:1-7

How do we pray for our country? How do we pray for anything? So often our prayers are about us, our comfort, our desires, so that we look good. Last week as our church gathered to pray for our country, I heard one person pray, "Lord we pray not that America would be great again, but that your Name would be great in America again!" What a great prayer...things are not going to really change in this country because of, economic policies, foreign policies, border policies, race relation policies...or many other campaign issues of our day. Our problem in this country, in the world, is us! We have made everything about us, including the purpose of prayer and what we want to see happen. We have forgotten that everything is for the purpose of God being glorified.

The Scripture tells us that, "whatever you do in word or deed, do it to the glory of God..." How do you pray? Is it for the glory of God? What do you want to see happen in our country, in our communities, in our churches, in our homes? Is it about the glory of God? In our prayers we have become spiritual narcissist...we are the center of our own universe and everyone, including God, exist for us. Can't we see how damaging this is and how it leads to a me first mentality...which is the antithesis of what Jesus has called us to. Jesus came to glorify His Father, we exist to glorify the Lord...let’s keep that the main thing in all we say, in all we do and in all we pray!
