JANUARY 7 READINGS…Genesis 21:8-24:67
There is so much in today’s readings…I hope you enjoyed the reading and were blessed. Let me start by saying I love the name of Nahor’s two oldest sons…Uz and Buz…sounds like two guys I would like to hang out with.
On a serious note of course the account of Abraham taking Isaac to Mount Moriah deserves our attention. Once again we see the great faith of Abraham in not only his willingness to trust God and take Isaac to the place of sacrifice that the Lord had directed…but even in his statement when he left his servant, in saying, “…the boy and I will return”. Abraham so believed God even in the greatest of tests. The place he called “Yahweh Yireh”, the Lord will provide. I love the proverb that came out of that name…”On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided”. Maybe you know that it was on that mountain that 2000 years later the very Son of God would die as the ultimate and final sacrifice for the sin of all mankind. It was on that mountain that the Father gave His Son, Jesus, for you and for me. Just a side thought in our reading today God showed four times that He is “Yahweh-Yireh”…here with Abraham, also with Hagar and Ishmael with water in the wilderness, with Abraham having a burial place, and finally with Isaac being given Rebekah as his wife.
Another side note for those who have traveled to the Middle East…I hope you enjoyed that exchange between Abraham and Ephron over the burial ground that Abraham wanted to purchase. What a classic Middle-eastern exchange of bargaining over the price for that land.
Finally, we see God’s hand in continuing His plan through Abraham and his descendants. Isaac was the son of promise…the one through whom the promised nation, and ultimately the promised Messiah would come. It was important that Isaac have a proper wife, and Abraham was going to make sure it came to pass. The mission of Abraham’s servant, and the God ordained events that occurred in his journey, once again show us the providential hand of God in human events. He is The God who is intimately involved in human affairs. He cares for us…He is involved in our lives…and His will and plans are going to be accomplished. Know that you are an important part of His plan, as He knows who and where you are…and He is at work in your life.
Please share the things that touched you in today’s readings. We are so blessed to have the Lord speak to us through His Word and by His Spirit.
