JANUARY 24 READING…MATTHEW 42 & MATTHEW 18
Today we learn the no one sins in a vacuum…our sins will always find us out, and all sin has consequence, that are bigger than we ever expected. There was a famine in the land and Joseph’s brothers were sent to Egypt, because Egypt had plenty of food due to Joseph’s God-given wisdom. Joseph tests the honesty of his dishonest brothers…he wants to know if they have changed. Joseph requires them to leave one behind, Simeon, as a surety that they would return with their youngest brother, proving they were honest men. All the while they did not know this powerful man requiring this of them was their brother Joseph. They realized though that what they had done to Joseph so many years previously was coming back on them. The brothers head back with what Joseph had required them to do, and the thought of it caused their father Jacob to grieve greatly. Their sin was coming back on them, and their sin not only affected themselves, but their sin affected others, this is the way that sin works. We never sin in a vacuum.
In Matthew 18 Jesus teaches us both about sin, and forgiveness. We are called to be humble followers of Christ. Jesus warns of hurting the little ones, he says it would be better for them to suffer having a milestone tied around their neck and be thrown into the depths of the sea, in comparison to the eternal consequences of this sin. Take heed all these who are harming our children with their ungodly agenda of perversion and anti-God rhetoric. Jesus teaches us about forgiveness…that we ought to forgive those who ask it from us. We all need forgiveness, for we are all guilty of sin. Here is the most wonderful truth, Jesus paid the price for our sin on the cross. It is important for us to remember that it was our sin that put Him on the cross…we also need to remember the eternal truth that sin always brings consequences. The consequences of our sin are the Son of God dying on the cross.
