JANUARY 23 DEVOTION BIBLE READING:  JOHN 12:22-36

Frustration and fear can cause you to shut down. The feeling of being overwhelmed in this crazy world might make you want to check out. The pressure of those who desired to be your "Holy Spirit," trying to tell you what you can say, what you should do and how you should live, could cause you to surrender to and listen to the wrong voice. We all can easily be overwhelmed with the events of the day. Here in America, it is clear we live in a post-Christian era. The love of many has grown cold; truth has been changed into whatever society declares to be in vogue...even professing Christians live and believe contrary to the Scriptures and have convinced themselves that it is alright in the eyes of God. Sometimes it might seem easier just to sit in the darkness, because it has become so difficult to shine the light.

We must never forget that the Lord is still on His throne. He has not abdicated His position, nor has He ceased to be who He eternally is. The Scripture says, "He does not sleep, nor does He slumber." Nothing happening today in this world happens without Him knowing it...He doesn't miss a thing. He has a plan; long before the events of our day He already knew what would happen. He is still Lord and He is still in control. His promises are true, and He will reward all who seek Him, follow Him and obey Him by faith. The Lord intends to use us as His light in this dark and godless world. We are part of His great plan...we cannot quit...we cannot cease...we cannot check out, for our own sake or for the sake of others. We must not be driven by fear or worry, but empowered by the Holy Spirit of God. Jesus is Lord today, tomorrow and forever. The events of the world we live in cannot change that fact...but that fact needs to change us!
