JANUARY 15 READING…GENESIS 30 & MATTHEW 9
Today the theme of our reading is to be sure that we put our trust in God only. Human beings have the capability of being deceitful and even dangerous toward other humans…God is not like that. In Genesis we see the relationship between two scoundrels, Jacob and Laban. Both of these men were out for themselves. Neither one were trustworthy men, it was there nature at this time in their lives. This created a situation where both their families were completely dysfunctional. Everyone getting what they could from others, even in their own family. Later Jacob would change after he put his faith in the Lord, but much harm would be done before then. We each need to do what the scripture says and put others before self…we also need to be people of integrity, rather than being like Jacob and Laban.
Matthew 10 tells us of the calling and the sending out of the 12 Apostles. In Jesus’ instruction to them, He tells them to trust in God as the go about their mission. Some will treat them well, but most would not. They needed to trust in God and not other humans. Jesus warned them of the persecution that was coming…once again don’t trust in mankind, trust in God. He told them that He causes division, and if they followed Him, they would be seen this way. But they were to minister to all people…trusting God to provide for them.
