JANUARY 1 READING…GENESIS 1&2, PSALM 148, EPHESIANS 1
Today we begin our journey through the Bible thematically…most days we will be reading from both the Old & New Testaments & Psalms. The hope is that these readings will help us to see the important themes in Scripture, and by the end of the year we will have read through the entire Bible.
One might think that today’s theme would be creation, but that is not the case. The theme is “GOD”. Thirty-one times in chapter 1 of Genesis God is declared. He is the beginning of all things, and all things that were created were done so by His Word. Nothing existed…God spoke all things into existence. Genesis does not attempt to prove the existence of God…it DECLARES the existence of God. In the creation of humanity, still the emphasis is on God…mankind was created in His image, and for His glory. Psalm 148 is an expression of praise toward God for who He is and all the wonderful things He has done. To us His works are too great for our minds to image…to God even the creation of all things is a small thing. I don’t say small to diminish the magnitude of creation, or the work of God, but more to exalt the greatness of God.
Ephesians 1 is an expression of the sovereignty of God, and that all that we have from our glorious God is given to us in Christ Jesus. Four times in Ephesians 1 Paul states the wonderful things we have received, “In Him”…that is Jesus.
