FEBRUARY 13 DEVOTION BIBLE READING: EPHESIANS 4:25-32
Anger is one of those emotions that can either be used for good or for harm. There are some things in this world that ought to invoke anger. When Jesus saw the religious people of His day abusing and misusing His Father's house, He became angry and did what needed to be done. The thing about the Lord's anger is that it did not control Him, He controlled it. We are told to "be angry, but do not sin." The point is that we are never to be out of control in our anger. We are to walk controlled by the Holy Spirit...every emotion under His control. Too often we let our emotions control us; this should not be, because our emotions can certainly be wrong. If the Holy Spirit is in control, He will use our emotions and everything else He has given us in a righteous way. Uncontrolled anger causes destruction and never brings forth the fruit of the Spirit in us.
The Apostle Paul tells us, "do not let the sun go down on your wrath.” We should not go to bed angry. Before we lay our head down, we should either take care of what brought on our anger, or we should give it to God. Fleshly anger destroys relationships, harms our witness, moves us to a place of not being used of God and it can even be unhealthy. Though anger is a God-given emotion, it can be and often is used outside of God's will. If in every situation you find yourself being angry, then it is time to spend some time with the Lord. We want to live in such a way that when the world sees us, they see Jesus in us. Our continued, uncontrolled anger, does not present Christ. Like with everything else in our lives, we must surrender our all, our emotions, especially our anger, to the Lord. He can take them, mold them and use them for His glory in every situation and circumstance.
