FEBRUARY 12 DEVOTION BIBLE READING: EPHESIANS 4:25-32
We live in a day when truth seems to be the first casualty. Every day we are bombarded on the internet from every imaginable site under the sun with stories that have no basis in truth...they are filled with lies. When researched they do not stand up. There are even sites that rate the amount of truth in news stories; sadly many of them aren't all that reliable. We rate our lies...the little ones we call "white lies”...but if they are bigger we call them LIES! as if there is any difference. Multiple times I have seen politicians getting caught in lies, only to proclaim they did not lie, they just misspoke. It really doesn't matter how fancy you wrap it, whether you spray it with something sweet smelling, or you change its name to be more palatable, it's still a lie.
The Scripture calls Satan the "father of lies." He is filled with deceit, yet he would have you believe that what he offers is the best for you. It was in Eden that he lied to Adam and Eve, believing his lies led to the fall of man. In his temptations of Jesus again he lied and warped the Scripture in an attempt to get Jesus to sin. Jesus responded to his temptation and lies with the truth. If Jesus is the truth and Satan is the father of lies, when we speak truth or speak lies we reveal who we are following. In this day and time truth is desperately needed, for there are so many sources of information. We need to understand that whether a lie originates with us or we continue to pass it on, we are still guilty of lying. When lies flow from our mouth we lose all integrity and people cease to trust us. At that point we lose the ability to share with them the most important truth of all...the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As you go through your day, today and every day, speak truth...do not let any lie come out of your lips...do not rationalize the severity of your lie and do not make excuses. Speak truth...be a follower of Jesus!
