DECEMBER 31 READING…ZEPHANIAH 1-3 & PSALM 147
Zephaniah was born during the reign of Judah’s most evil king, Manasseh. The nation was clearly headed for judgment, but God would use Zephaniah to speak boldly to call the nation to repentance, and to enact reform. The Prophet spoke of three major evils that were in the land...they were idolatry, violence, and apathy. Judah had followed the example of Israel, and left worship of the one true God for the worship of idols. Without the guidance of the Lord, and reverence for Him, the land was filled with violence and deceit. The people soon became apathetic toward anything to do with God…and they had no desire to change any of their evil ways. Zephaniah called them to repentance, which sadly, was short lived for the nation as a whole…yet there remained a remnant. We finish the book of Psalms with a call to praise the Lord. The heart of praise will bring thankfulness. We are thankful and praise the Lord for His mighty power and protective hand.
